Oh PLEASE----not again.

Well, things became a bit scary for us while we were at the hospital. Nolan's pediatrician came by to take a look at him and realized that his heart rate was much slower than what they would like. So, out comes the monitors and neonatalogist. If having one baby so dangerously close to death isn't enough to put you over, having another one pretty well does the job. They evaluated his heart and breathing for 24 hours watching for serious declines. They like the babies to have heart rates close to 120 beats per minute (bpm) and Nolan's was consistently in the 80's. If he had gone into the 70's or 60's, they would have stolen him away, but because they didn't (once it did go into the 70's, but it didn't stay). He was able to stay with me, but it left me watching yet another one of my sons possibly fall into who knows what. It was a horribly long night for me. I didn't get so much as 10 minutes of sleep not only from the monitors, but too because Nolan was regularly spitting up and choking on mucus from child birth. I'd get him nice and calm, then the nurse would show up to check him and change his pulse ox and leave him for me to calm again. He wanted to nurse frequently too since he kept losing what he had in his belly. It was my morning nurse who picked up on that I hadn't had more than 2 hours of sleep since I delivered 29 hours earlier, who asked if she could take him to the nurse's station. I did manage to sleep for an hour before the doctor showed up to check on me, and then others for birth certificates and pictures and then his pediatrician called wanted an update on his condition. I told my nurse that I didn't care what the monitors said, I wanted further tests which, my pediatrician actually did decide to do before even being notified of my wants. She still wasn't happy with his heart rate (it basically never changed). So off he went for an EKG, which he screamed through, making the results almost impossible to read. I insisted on another and they told me that they had to wait to see if the cardiologist felt he needed one or not. My pediatrician (WHO I LOVE!) insisted on another when she showed up at the hospital a few hours later. They had me hold him while they tested and he stayed very calm. We had to wait almost 9 hours before the cardiologist showed up to evaluate him and the tests. THANKFULLY----the doctor gave him the all clear. He doesn't know if the rate will just be a typical thing for him or if it was related to birth and the meds, so he is having me bring him in again in a few weeks for more tests just to be sure that nothing amounts from it. This cardiologist is FETAL and PEDIATRIC specialist too, so that made me feel even better. SoOOOOOO.....anyway, Nolan is just fine! My boys just like to keep me on my toes!
